Oh TB, the granddaddy of all torrent sites, the site which shaped how all modern day sites are run and are operated today. b>==================================================
I joined this site by pure dumb luck back in 2004, i'd just got my first computer at home and had adsl1 256 man I thought I was leet 'little did I know that I wasnt going to stand a chance on a real bt site with a connection like that'. I was fascinated by this site as everyday I browsed it there where pages and pages of new files in all categories being added, and no word of a lie in TB's hayday it would on average add around 60 new torrents a day. b>================================================== ============
Then there was that one fatefull day I went to click on my TB bookmark and what did I see?? first there was the now famous 'you can click but you cant hide', screen O_O where had the site gone.........then there was that comic strip with the doughnuts and the robot walking the plank on the pirate ship 'which was amusing' (Can users remember the screen the MPAA put up on elite torrents when it got shut down), at the time there was also speculation that the sysops of elitetorrents actually provided information to the police to get TB shut down, as back then it was a battle between TB and ET for supremacy. b>================================================== ==============
All entered the IRC chan, it was at maximum capacity as users were wondering about what had happened, there was speculation in the air and people were worried about what would happen to them, was the database going to be turned over to the police and were all TB's users going to be slapped with summons to go to court. It was all new to me and many others, though as it was a high profile site 'hosted in the US at the time from memory', there was a lot of information publicly avaliable on the net.... everyone breathed a sigh of relief, its only the uploaders that are going to get nailed to the cross..sad way to think about it but hey human nature is human nature. b>==================================================
It was over :( though supernova the king of public trackers was still active and with over 1 million hits a day it was sure to have something that you wanted, and not having much of an idea of the scene I just leeched and leeched from supernova like there was no tomorrow, no ratio to worry about \o/. b>==================================================
But then it hit the internet TB2 was in development. Everyone was flocking to their IRC and website hoping to ensure their spot in the user base. I got an account awesome 'server load is high at the moment please wait', :(. Having a lot more knowledge of the scene and bit-torrent by then, and realising what a blessing the original TB was I was a little confused. This wasn't the only problem plaguing the reintroduction of TB, there were issues with servers, issues with whom was going to provide content, and due to the longevity of there's issues a lot of new content providers pulled out and went to other sites. b>==================================================
The site went down again, suspicions of another police raid perchance? Not at all, there were just to many bugs to and issues to take into consideration and to attend to whilst still having to deal with the content and a full database of users. b>==================================================
The site eventually did go up, and my spiddy senses didnt pick up on it, I was at university and when I got home there was about 7 messages waiting for me on msn 'TORRENTBYTES2 IS BACK UP GET AN ACCOUNT NOW AS THEY HAVE DISALLOWED ALL SIGNUPS PREVIOUSLY', gah wtf thats not fair I thought, by the time I actually had the chance to log an account I got the screen we all dread when we click the signup button 'user limited...inactive....pruned', there must have been an uproar as the original database from the original TB was installed, so all the same crew was back. b>==================================================
But it wasnt the same, everyone was adopting the TB-Source code, and the sites major content provider was no where to be found. Speeds were still great 'well comming from a country where the fastest download to your door is around 2.4mb actual it was still great'. b>================================================== ======
TB is still a great sight to this day, and would still be classified as one of the big guns. I hear around that the site is pretty much open signup now and its easy to get an account, this wasnt always the case, so enjoy being part of a community that was the innovator of bit-torrent as we know it today and still is in some sense's as the music packs that you are finding on most sites and definately the idea of packs in general came from the granddaddy part2.
